The Three Layers of Change

For us to create real change in our lives, we need to see ourselves as a whole. This is a problem however because people find it difficult to see themselves as a whole, as one. For example many individuals believe that they are somehow located within their head, while others believe their essence is focused in their chest area. It’s a commonly held belief that the body is merely a vehicle to use, and that the person is separate from the body.

We can see that this belief is a misconception by simple observation – if we look at people on the street, especially those who are 40, 50 and over – and see their outright negligence. We see obesity, people bent over with stiffness, completely oblivious to their physical selves. This situation occurs when we’re trapped inside a very specific sense of self-identification.

In a state of narrow self-identification, we are confined to our boundaries, limitations, inner emotional contradictions, conflicts, dissatisfactions and sorrows in our lives. In order to create real change in our lives, we have to have much more than simply theoretical knowledge and go much further than physical trials. We need to adopt a holistic approach and work on our self-identification.

Self-identification is the basis for any process of change or self empowerment. If I identify myself with my dissatisfactions, lack of energy, boredom, fear and so on – that’s how my life will look; that’s who I’ll be and I’ll be confined within those boundaries.

Tools such as meditation and visualization are tools that treat the source of self-identification, and real development must always originate from the source.

It’s important to realize that one layer cannot function properly without the other. If we ignore one layer and do not treat it, the other layers will be affected as well. We are one whole being and not separate pieces. Our psychology isn’t separate from our body, and our body isn’t separate from our self-identification, our mind, our thoughts, and how we live our lives. Our choices are what define us, we are our choices.

If our self-identification is initially narrow, anything built upon it will inevitably fail and will be full contradictions and inner conflicts. A flowing, continuous process of self empowerment won’t be possible since narrow self identification will lead us to concentrate on our fears and the daily wear & tear.

There are three main layers apparent in the process of change:

1. The energetic layer – my self-identification
2. The mental layer – my psychology, my image, my goal
3. The physical layer – my physical ability to achieve, to change, to work hard, even if I have physical limitations

When one of these layers is out of balance, or isn’t evident, it will be virtually impossible to create real change in life.
The basis to everything is the energetic layer, our ‘spiritual’ layer, our self-identification. If we identify ourselves as weak and lacking in energy and ability – that’s how our life will look, that’s how we’ll live our life. This self-identification will also signal automatic collapse of the other layers. By identifying ourselves as weak, listless, stuck in a rut, etc. we will affect our mental layer. This will cause us to experience bad moods, a negative outlook on life, inherent pessimism, lack of will power and often social solitude.

After a prolonged period of narrow self-identification, the body will also start to react. We will become ill more often and be increasingly prone to allergies. The body will become weaker and sometimes we can even develop chronic diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

How do I facilitate the change I want to create if I lack the energy?

It often happens that people who are interested in creating change in their lives are stuck in a vicious circle of lack of energy, resulting from narrow self-identification. The more I identify myself with laziness, lack of energy or my fears, the more reasons to back this up will pop up in the mental layer, justifying even further why change is impossible. The physical layer is also involved. For instance – we know we should go on a diet, but as we haven’t started it yet it’s OK for the time being to eat junk food.

The vicious circle of lack of energy as a result of narrow self-identification

Our only way to break the circle is to transform our self-identification to a broader self-identification or another self-identification altogether. It’s possible to use a variety of spiritual tools to achieve this goal. If we choose not to transform our self-identification, all our efforts to create real change will be in vain.

It’s important to remember – all three layers function and are dependent on one another. When one fails, the others fail. When the mental layer is weak, the self-identification will be affected. This goes for the body as well – when the body is weak, the mental layer is affected. When the self identification is narrow, we can’t build anything at all.

Test yourselves:

  • How many times have told yourself that you should quit smoking? And tried? And gone back to smoking?
  • How many times have you told yourself that you should work out? And you didn’t start – or did start but quickly gave up?
  • How many times have you taken the time to watch videos and read books on specific topics to motivate yourself into doing the things you wanted – and it didn’t happen?

If you find yourself answering “this has happened to me”, the problem lies in your self-identification – you see yourself in ways that you have created, and many believe that the ability to imagine is the key.

If you can imagine yourself as something, you can reach it. Visualization is one of the most important tools you have for changing your self-identification. Right now you may lack energy and ability, but if you can start to see yourself as a strong being, as the best possible version of yourself, you’ve taken the first step toward initiating change.

Ideas don’t create change – abandon them

No matter how good your ideas are, or how many workouts, diets or quit smoking plans you’ve discovered, it won’t change a thing. You won’t change. You won’t find the energy or the increased motivation to stop bad habits, addictions or begin anything new, because your self-identification – at its core – is narrow.

You have to see yourself as thin, healthy and a non-smoker in order to initiate a process of change – you have to see that it’s possible – it’s you against yourself.

The only way to do this is to understand that your current perspective isn’t really you, but rather an accumulation of beliefs, thoughts, education and ideas that can be altered. But as long as you identify with your weaknesses, fears and lack of energy, that’s how your life will look, those will be your boundaries.

Abandon the ideas, and start seeing the best possible version of yourself. Realize that you are in your own hands.

Open up a word document or take a pen and paper and ask yourself “what’s the best possible version of me?”, and write it down, in detail. See yourself there, see what you look like, how you behave, talk, and how you think – and start identifying yourself with the person you really are.

Building the best version of yourself means being the best you can be, achieving your real potential. Allow yourself to put that change in motion starting today, and discover that in reality you have no limitations.
