The Blow Dry

The hair-styling looks change with the season. Getting a new look to last a couple days or a couple hours begins with the blow-dry. Whether you blow dry daily or every couple of days keeping a healthy beautiful head of hair and using the proper technique can make all the difference.
Balancing beautiful hair and healthy hair is an ongoing conversation every season with my clients. Stress caused by improper use of tools is not immediately seen in the hair. For some using more heat in a flat iron is the only way to get the hair on the ends to look presentable. It is easy to accept this and to get into the routine of using excessive heat on their hair daily. Doing this will damage the hair in a very short time. The alternate is learning how to balance styling with care and your hair could be with you all season long without having to cut it. Here are a few things you can do to balance maintaining healthy beautiful hair.

THE BEAUTIFUL BLOW DRY

  1. Towel dry; Blot the hair with a towel before applying product.
  2. Apply product; Use enough product to influence the hair. Example- for mid back length hair a pea size drop of product is not enough.
  3. Pre-dry; detangle with a wide tooth comb or “Wet Brush” Get most of the moisture out of your hair before you start working with a brush. Use your hands lifting at the scalp. Divide the head into two (2) sections- the top of the hair where you want lift and the bottom of your hair where you need movement.
  4. Direction; on top lift the hair for volume, think direction you want the end results. This is going to take some practice, but once you have done it a few times you will know right where you need to hold the hair to get your results. The bottom- move the hair back and forth at the scalp. Tip your head and move all of the hair to one side of your head. Then tip the other way. Do this until the hair is dry at the scalp and the ends are most of the way dry.
  5. Finish; Use a brush. The smaller the sections the more control over the end results. Larger sections are easier, just not as good an end result. Clip hair out of the way that you are not blow-drying.

  1. Adjust the settings; Different types of hair for different heat settings on your blow-dryer. If you have resistant, healthy hair, then you can use higher heat settings. For fragile, chemically treated hair it is healthier for the hair to use medium to low heat settings. Newer heated tool heat up to 475 degrees, no matter how healthy your hair is, daily use at this temp is going to cause stress. LOWER THE HEAT
  2. Directional nozzles; If you are more experienced the directional nozzle on your blow-dryer, can focus the airflow, shortening your drying time. Line the nozzle up with the brush and desired direction for your finished look. Do not touch the hair with the directional nozzle, it will create excessive heat and can contribute to long term heat stress on the hair.
  3. Brushes; Use the proper tool for the job. A round or flat brush when you want a little volume and bend to the hair. A boar’s hair or thermal brush when you want volume or hair that looks like it has been ironed smooth. Boar’s hair is healthier because they generate less heat than thermal brushes. Be careful to not use too much tension and loose the benefits from lower heat. Your hair may need that heat from a thermal brush to get smooth. Try both to experience the results.
  4. Product; Without product the hair will not respond the same. Find the products that work best for you. Shampoo & Conditioners, Thermal protect-ant & Leave in conditioners, Hold & smoothing. You have to try the product to know whether or not it will work for you.
