Finding a Hairstylist

A session with the right hairstylist can be an exciting experience. They look at you and see it before it happens. They know what will look best on you, enhancing your most beautiful/ best features. Finding the right hairstylist for you can make that experience life fulfilling.

The first meeting you have with a hair stylist is the most important. This is what you should expect in that first meeting; lifestyle- as it applies to your hair, hair needs- what you love-like-and-dislike about your hair currently, products you are currently using. After this consultation they will repeat to you what they’ve heard, make suggestions, recommendations for product and use, so that you can re-create the look easily and give you the opportunity to agree or disagree with what they have heard.

It is so important that in this first meeting you make sure they hear what you have shared. If there is a breakdown in communication here, the rest of the experience will not work out well for you. Make sure to mention your home routine, your hair goals, the brushes you use, how you style your hair, products you currently use, are you willing to change any of these things to get what you want in results? After hearing this information I ask one question- “how is this working for you? Are you getting the results you want?” Depending on the answer, I know where to start working to help with your needs.

A hair stylist who listens will be the most helpful. If at any time you feel that you have not been heard and it is taking more effort to get your point across than it should politely end the experience. Yes, run out of there. Accept your loss of time now before the experience costs you months of growing out a bad haircut, or worse haircolor.

Bring visuals with you. If you do not have visual references with you, the hair stylist should be sharing images with you. As a hair stylist myself it does save a lot of time when I work with clients who bring in images. Part of my job is to find the best images. I am not resentful that I have to search for some images. I use a tablet to find images that are the best representations of a look the client is seeking. Even with clients who bring images, I still share images I think look great.

Make sure you have the hairstylists undivided attention. If they are busy it is a good sign, they must be talented, a lot of people need them. However, the time you pay for as a client is your time, you should be the focus. If they can not focus on you for 15 minutes on your first visit you can expect that on future visits you will never be the focus of their time. No matter how great a hair stylist is,if they are not focused on you, you are not getting their best..

You should get a lot of information from this visit along with a future reservation date. Knowing when to come back in is a must for maintaining your look. If you do not continue proper maintenance of the hair you cannot expect the hair to do what you need it to.
